Dear Charles,
I came to your salon Tuesday evening in desperate need of repair to a haircut I had two weeks ago [at another salon].
I was so miserable for those two weeks - all I could think about was how awful my hair looked. You cut my hair so amazingly beautiful, I love it. No matter what I do to it, the look is great. It’s so easy to care for. I love the products and want to thank you so much for your talent and making me feel good again.
See you soon.

I had my hair cut by Charles today. It was my first visit to Maksou. Quite simply, it was the best haircut I have ever received in my life! In fact, the entire visit was a pleasure. The receptionist was most pleasant and helpful and all of the staff were so very professional. For me, it was the best salon experience I have ever had.
Many thanks,
- Lorraine Quinn
I love my hair! Thank you so much. All my friends love it. It looks even better when I wear it curly. It doesn’t “poof” anymore thanks to you. Please also thank Jared for me. The color is perfect and even my dad liked it (which was a surprise to everyone). I’ve gotten so many compliments that I just thought I should write you a note to thank you. Once again, I love it and thanks! I’ll see you soon.

Charles,
I don’t know how to thank you enough! I love my new look and I have you to thank for it. I feel like a new person. Thank you for making me feel like a princess!

Charles,
Three years ago as my birthday approached, I started going through my first mid-life crisis. After an entire lifetime of playing it safe, I wanted to get a real haircut. I wanted something special, something that would make people take notice. I started paying attention to other people’s hairstyles, wondering if the right stylist could work some kind of miracle on my curly, frizzy, lifeless mop. Then I saw “it” on a friend. It was a haircut that transformed her face. I had never seen a cut do that for anyone before. She looked different. Better. Happier. I wanted that. My friend with the great hair told me about Charles at Maksou. I admit I flinched when she told me that he was in Boston, which meant at least a half-day commitment coming from the suburbs, and the cost was significantly more than my current salon. But I wanted a change; I needed a transformation. I wanted that hair. I decided to splurge…just once.
I’ve been to many hair salons and I can tell you, there is nothing typical about Charles Maksou or his eponymous shop. His salon, now almost [six] years old, is chic, soothing, and creative – a direct reflection of this hair stylist himself (he prefers ‘hair designer’). If fact, in my three years of going to Maksou, the salon looks different each time I go. Like the hair he designs, his salon is a work in progress. To Charles, his work is his art, and each client is a new creation. “I want to change Boston’s image. Too many people are stuck in the eighties,” he laments of Boston men and women. “They should look modern. They need style.” Charles creates style.
Charles and his hair stylists use a unique technique known as “the dry cut.” He discovered this technique over [eight] years ago when he studied under hair designer, John Sahag, in New York. Sahag developed this method over 20 years ago and has used it on such stars as Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Winona Ryder and Janet Jackson, to name just a few of his impressive client list. Using this method, Charles and his stylists, who he rigorously trains, are able to carve out shapes that are impossible with wet hair. They can see the final look from the beginning and they know exactly how the hair falls. Unlike most hair stylists who first wash your hair, then cut it wet, Charles first blow-dries his client’s hair absolutely straight. While he is doing that, he discusses the type of cut the client wants. Once the hair is straight, he examines the face; then he starts cutting. Clients are able to see their hair taking shape with each snip of the scissors. “Many hairstylists just cut without regard to the face,” he explains as he wields his magic scissors. “Sometimes there is a popular haircut that people want, and many hairstylists will create that style, but they aren’t paying attention to the face. I always work around the face.” With each client, Charles explains what he is doing while he’s doing it and why, so that his client will better understand their hair and how to replicate the style that they wear when they leave the salon. He snips strand by strand, pinning up various parts of the hair so he can see how every layer and every hair falls. He doesn’t just work around the head from shoulder to shoulder; he uses the face as the nucleus. After he is done shaping the hair, he then sends the client to have his or her hair washed, then, when the client returns to his chair, he styles his masterpiece. This entire process, from start to finish, takes somewhere between 1 and 1 ½ hours. During that time, Charles makes his clients feel pampered and nurtured. He says, “I want to treat my clients as I would want to be treated. They deserve that.”
It is Charles’ attitude, approach and talent that keep his clients satisfied. “I have clients from all over the world,” remarks Charles. “They keep coming back.” The impressive list of clientele who visit Maksou keeps growing. Charles is currently the hair designer for Natalie Jacobson as well as a number of other Boston news anchors. Other clients have included Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, The Go-Go’s, and Anthony Michael Hall. Working with local modeling agencies, Charles is a frequent hair designer for models participating in photo shoots for national and international magazines. He also works with some of Boston’s hippest and most prestigious boutiques and designers such as Betsey Johnson, Emporio Armani, Prada, Players, and Culture Shock. This past year, The Improper Bostonian voted Maksou “Best of Boston.”
My original plan was to visit Charles just once. It has been three years now and I am still trekking into Boston, I’m still paying the big bucks, and I’m still happy when I leave the salon. And as each year passes and another birthday approaches, I visit Charles in anticipation. That way, I start my next year celebrating in style.
